Richard J.R. Raleigh, Jr. selected as President-Elect of Alabama State Bar Association

Huntsville, Ala. – March 18, 2013 –Wilmer & Lee, P.A. is proud to announce, firm’s Managing Shareholder, Richard J.R. Raleigh, Jr., has been selected as President-Elect of the Alabama State Bar.  He will assume the responsibilities of President-Elect in July 2013 and President in July 2014.

The Alabama State Bar was created in 1923 as a state agency responsible for licensing and regulating legal professionals in the state, promoting the professional responsibility and competence of its members, improving the administration of justice, and increasing the public understanding and respect for the law. The State Bar currently has over 16,000 active members.  Raleigh is currently serving in his ninth year on the Board of Directors of the Alabama State Bar, where he has served the bar in many capacities.  In 2014, Raleigh will joins the ranks of 4 men from the Huntsville area who have served as President of the Alabama State Bar during its history—one of whom is also a current Wilmer & Lee attorney, S. Dagnal Rowe (1997-98).

A native of Griffin, Ga., Raleigh graduated from the University of Alabama in 1992 and the University of Alabama School of Law in 1995. Following law school, Raleigh entered the United State Army Judge Advocate General’s Corp, and served in Germany, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, and Macedonia. After serving his active duty military commitment, Raleigh returned to Alabama in 2000 to join Wilmer & Lee, P.A.  Raleigh is admitted in Alabama and Tennessee and he focuses his practice on litigation in state and federal courts, including employment litigation, government contract litigation, trade secret litigation, and general corporate litigation.

As a Fellow in the Alabama Law Foundation, Raleigh is dedicated to Access to Justice and Pro Bono issues.  Among other work in this area, Raleigh is the immediate past president of the Board of Directors of the Madison County Volunteer Lawyers Program.  At the July 2010 annual meeting of the Alabama State Bar, Raleigh was presented the President’s Award for Meritorious for his work with the Volunteer Lawyers Program.

Raleigh also works hard serving his local community.  He has served the Huntsville-Madison County Bar Association on numerous committees; he has served for seven years on the Board of Directors of the National Children’s Advocacy Center, including as its president; and he has served on the Board of the Old Town Historic District Association. Raleigh is also a member of the Downtown Rotary Club and member and past president of the Downtown Forty-Seven.

Raleigh attends Huntsville First United Methodist Church with his wife of 17 years, the former Shannon Ellinghausen, originally of Bibb County, Alabama, who is an Outreach Coordinator in NASA’s Space Launch System Office as a NASA Contractor.  They are the proud parents of five-year old twins, Sarah Medders and Tripp.
